Summary
Low Back Pain Coach is a free download. Your next-session preview, your first guided session (you can replay it from Today while you have no plan, except on a flare-up day, a day when extension work is stopped, or a day with a warning sign logged), the pain log, calendar, 30 days of graphs, CSV export, lessons, and flare-up help (including its floor session) are free. Plans let you run and save the ongoing guided sessions set from your pain logs and recent workouts, and add weekly reviews, workout history beyond your first saved session, graphs past 30 days, backup, optional color themes, and a PDF report for your clinician. A plan costs $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial where you are eligible. Earlier lifetime purchases keep full access. Core use does not require an account. Starting with version 1.7.1, the app sends anonymous step counts (a step name and the app version; for the plan screen, which button opened it) so we can see where new users stop; see Anonymous step counts. Workout logs, pain logs, and program state stay on your device unless you choose to sign in. If you create an optional account, we process and store your pain logs, workouts, saved walks, everyday ratings, and program state on our servers to provide sync. Purchases are processed by Apple or Google. We use RevenueCat to validate entitlements. Reminders are optional local notifications on iPhone and Android, off until you turn them on. If you turn on Health sync, the app reads daily steps and sleep from Apple Health or Health Connect and keeps the raw readings on the device. Paid users can back up to their own Google Drive. With a plan, a doctor-ready PDF of training and pain history can be generated from data you have logged. If you email support, we receive whatever you send. If you enter your email on lowbackpaincoach.com to open the program card, we store that address (see Websites below).
Information the app stores on your device
The app uses on-device storage to run features, including:
- Pain logs you enter, with dates, self-reported pain levels on a 0 to 10 scale, optional sleep and stress ratings, pain location, and any notes you type.
- Daily steps and sleep, only if you turn on Health sync. The app reads them from Apple Health (iPhone) or Health Connect (Android), read-only, and keeps per-day totals on your device to show how activity and rest line up with your pain. The app does not write to Health. Raw daily step and sleep readings stay on the device. A walk you save holds its date and either the minutes you walked, a step count you chose and the app checked against Health data, or your fallback text. Those records go into your backup and, if you are signed in, your synced account.
- Workouts you log, with dates, progression stage, and per-set details such as reps, hold duration, optional weight, and range of motion where applicable.
- Program state, such as baseline values, progression stage (starting with Floor Foundations; later stages use a 45-degree back-extension bench), onboarding and guide flags, flare-up mode state, and achievements.
- Preferences, such as theme, weight units, and cached entitlement status after verification.
- Whether reminders are on and the times you chose, if you use reminders. Reminders are local notifications scheduled on the device.
- A short log of setup prompts you used (for example, finishing your first session or opening the plan screen). That log stays on the device. Starting with version 1.7.1, the app also keeps the date it was first opened and which step counts it has sent; those stay on the device too. Your baseline, how long you have had pain, your starting point, and whether you have a bench are program state. They stay on the device unless you sign in, and then they sync with your account.
- Settings for guided voice sessions. Guided sessions play audio bundled with the app, with your phone’s built-in text-to-speech as a fallback, on the device.
Uninstalling the app or using in-app reset (where available) may delete some or all of this on-device data, according to your device and the app’s behavior. Store purchase records remain tied to your Apple ID or Google account; see Purchases below.
Optional account and server sync
You do not need an account to use the core app. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we create an optional account so you can use another device.
If you create an optional account, we process and store your pain logs, workouts, saved walks, everyday ratings, and program state on our servers to provide sync. That processing happens on our backend at api.lowbackpaincoach.com (a Cloudflare Worker with Cloudflare D1 storage). Signed-in users may also use the web app at app.lowbackpaincoach.com.
Without an account, that data stays on the device. We do not upload pain logs, workouts, saved walks, everyday ratings, or program state for signed-out use.
When you sign in, your account ID also becomes your RevenueCat app user ID, so a purchase follows your account to another device. If you claim or share a referral code, our server stores the code, the two account IDs, the claim date, and whether the reward was granted.
Account identifiers we may process include your Apple or Google sign-in token or subject identifier, an internal account ID, and (if the identity provider supplies it and you allow it) an email address. We use this information to authenticate you, attach synced data to your account, restore entitlements, and respond to support or deletion requests.
On iPhone, optional Google sign-in uses Google’s Sign-In SDK, including when you connect Google Drive backup. The SDK declares collection of name, email address, phone number, coarse location and other data for app functionality; user identifiers for app functionality and analytics; and device identifiers, usage data and other data for analytics. These categories are declared as linked to you and not used for tracking. Our sync server does not store your email address. Google handles SDK data under Google’s privacy policy.
Anonymous step counts
Starting with version 1.7.1, the app counts how often a few steps happen across all users, so we can see where new users stop. Earlier versions send nothing. When you reach one of these steps, the app sends our server at api.lowbackpaincoach.com the step name and the app version (and, for the plan screen, which button opened it), and nothing else. The steps are: opening the app for the first time, finishing setup, starting and finishing the first guided session, seeing the plan screen (with which button opened it), starting a free trial, buying a plan, and opening the app again on a later day.
The server adds one to that day’s total (by UTC calendar day, not the time) for the step and version, and keeps those daily totals for analysis. It does not receive an account ID, a device ID, your pain logs or any health data, and it does not store your IP address or the time. Like any web request, the request shows your IP address to Cloudflare; our server uses it only for a moment to limit how often one address can send counts. The totals cannot be traced back to a person or a phone.
Counts are not sent from debug or test builds or from our own test accounts. Whether you opened the app on a later day is worked out on your phone from the first-open date it keeps there; that date is never sent.
Information we or our processors may process
Purchases and entitlements (Apple, Google, RevenueCat)
Paid plans are Pro Monthly ($9.99 per month) or Pro Annual ($59.99 per year), each with a 7-day free trial where you are eligible. Apple or Google decides eligibility. Supporter Lifetime is no longer sold; anyone who bought it keeps full access. Those are current U.S. prices. The app and store listing show the price at the time you buy, and Apple or Google controls taxes, currency, and the price at checkout.
When you start a trial, buy, or restore:
- Apple or Google processes payment and provides purchase receipts according to their policies.
- We use RevenueCat to validate purchases, manage entitlements, and help with restore purchases. RevenueCat may process technical identifiers (such as an app user ID), purchase transaction information, device and app metadata needed for fraud prevention and support, and related data as described in RevenueCat’s privacy policy.
On iPhone, RevenueCat also collects Apple’s AdServices attribution token. It tells us which Apple Search Ads campaign, if any, led to the install. It is not an advertising identifier and does not track you across other apps.
We do not need your pain or workout history to process a purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel in your store account. Cancellation and refunds follow Apple’s and Google’s own rules. On the App Store, cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date or the end of the trial.
Google Drive backup (paid plans)
Paid users can turn on automatic backup. The app uses Google sign-in to write a backup file to the hidden app-data folder of your own Google Drive. The file includes workouts, pain logs, baseline and baseline history, stage, saved walks, smaller-step ratings, activity names and ratings, and flare-up and warning-sign dates. We do not receive that backup. Turn it off in Settings. To delete the backup, open Google Drive on the web, go to Settings → Manage apps, and choose Delete hidden app data for Low Back Pain Coach.
CSV export and import
You can export a CSV backup through the share sheet and import one with the file picker. Where an exported file goes is your choice.
Doctor-ready PDF report
With a plan, you can generate a PDF report of training and pain history from data already on the device or, if you are signed in, from synced account data. If you share that file (for example through the system share sheet, email, or a clinic portal), where it goes is your choice. We do not receive the PDF unless you send it to us.
Support
If you email us at support@scrollingisevil.com, we receive whatever you choose to include, which may include health-related information if you put it in the message. We use support correspondence to respond and to improve the product, subject to applicable law.
Websites
Cloudflare hosts lowbackpaincoach.com, app.lowbackpaincoach.com, and scrollingisevil.com. When you open a page, Cloudflare handles the request (IP address, browser, and the page asked for) to serve the page and protect the site.
The program-card form on lowbackpaincoach.com stores the email address you enter, the time, and the page you came from, in Cloudflare storage. The card itself is open to everyone; the address is only used to email you when the program or the app changes, a few times a year at most. Reply to any of those emails, or write to support@scrollingisevil.com to have the address deleted. To stop abuse, the form also counts sign-up attempts from each IP address for one hour.
lowbackpaincoach.com and scrollingisevil.com do not load analytics scripts, third-party fonts, or ad trackers.
Processors
We use the following processors to operate the app, process payments, and (if you sign in) provide account sync:
- Apple, for App Store billing, Sign in with Apple, and related platform services.
- Google, for Google Play billing, Google sign-in, optional Google Drive backup, Health Connect on Android, and related platform services.
- RevenueCat, for purchase validation, entitlements, and restore.
- Cloudflare, for hosting and storage: our API and, when you use an account, synced pain logs, workouts, saved walks, everyday ratings, and program state (Worker and D1 at api.lowbackpaincoach.com), the web app at app.lowbackpaincoach.com, the program-card email list, and the websites.
Each processor handles data under its own terms and privacy policy. We do not sell your personal information.
What we do not do (as shipped)
Unless we disclose otherwise in an updated policy or in-app notice:
- We do not require an account for core use.
- The app is not intended to include third-party advertising or behavioral ad tracking as shipped.
- We do not use your pain logs or workouts for advertising.
Local notifications
Reminders are optional and off until you turn them on. On both iPhone and Android they are local notifications: the app schedules them on your device and the operating system shows them, with no server involved. The app asks the system for notification permission when you turn a reminder on, and you can turn reminders off in the app or in system settings.
Reminders you can turn on include:
- A daily pain-log reminder. After your first session the app offers one at 8:00 AM, which you can change or switch off.
- Pain-log check-ins, including the day after a workout, a day-2 check-in, and a daily check-in while flare-up mode is on. With a plan: workout-day reminders, a one-week note, and an invitation back after several days without training.
- If you start a free trial, the app asks once whether you want trial reminders: a day-2 check-in at 10:00 the morning after the trial starts, and one reminder shortly before the first charge. It offers only the ones still ahead and sends nothing unless you say yes. The charge reminder is set for 10:00 the day before. On iPhone it goes out early enough that Apple’s 24-hour cancellation window is still open, and is skipped if that time has passed. On Android, if that morning has passed, it goes out about two hours before the charge, and is skipped if that time has passed too.
- With the everyday plan, one reminder a day: at your walk time when a walk is set, otherwise in the evening for the smaller step. Off until you turn it on.
If notifications are allowed, the app can also show a local “Rest done” alert when you leave the app during a timed rest between sets. It has no separate switch and is not sent from a server.
Permissions
Depending on platform and your choices, the app may request permissions such as internet access (for purchases, entitlement checks, sign-in, optional sync, and optional Drive backup), billing (Google Play), notification permissions, read access to steps and sleep in Apple Health or Health Connect (only if you turn on Health sync), or photo library access when you pick a file to import. We request only what is needed for the described features.
Health-related information
Pain levels, workout logs, and program state may be sensitive or health-related. Treat them accordingly. If you stay signed out, they remain on the device. If you create an optional account, we process and store that information on our servers to provide sync, as described above.
The app is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition. It does not replace professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. See the Terms of Service and in-app disclaimers.
List of our other apps
Settings shows a list of our other apps. The app loads that list from a public file at scrollingisevil.com. The request carries no name, account, device identifier, or data from the app. Like any web request, it shows your IP address to Cloudflare, which hosts this site. If the request fails, the app shows the list built into it. Tapping a row opens that app’s store page.
Children’s privacy
The app is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your region). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided information to us through an account, support, or another channel, contact us and we will take appropriate steps, including deleting server copies where we control them.
Your choices, deletion, and rights
You can:
- Use the app without creating an account, in which case pain logs, workouts, saved walks, everyday ratings, and program state stay on the device.
- Delete data with Settings → Reset all data. It removes workouts, pain logs, progression, saved walks, everyday ratings, and activity ratings from this phone and, if you are signed in, from your account and other signed-in devices. Uninstalling the app also removes on-device data.
- If you are signed in, request deletion of server copies by emailing support@scrollingisevil.com, or use Settings → Delete account (at the bottom of Settings while you are signed in). The web app at app.lowbackpaincoach.com provides account deletion.
- Cancel a subscription in your Apple or Google account settings. Deleting the app or your account does not automatically cancel a store subscription.
- Restore purchases on devices signed in with the same store account.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export personal data, or to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise rights or ask questions about data we hold from an account, support email, or RevenueCat/store processing, contact support@scrollingisevil.com. We will respond as required by applicable law.
Purchase history is also held by Apple or Google. Use their account tools for store records.
International users
If you use the app from outside the United States, your information may be processed in the United States or other countries where we or our processors operate, which may have different data-protection rules than your country.
Security
We rely on platform security, Cloudflare infrastructure, and reputable payment and entitlement providers. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. Use the app, optional account sync, and any shared PDF reports with that in mind.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the new version at the same URL (or a successor URL we link from the store listing) and update the “Last updated” date. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy, to the extent permitted by law.
